Completed La Plata via Ellingwood ridge today. Still several patches of snow filling the Eastern gullies. I had good success either committing to the ridge for some Class 4 or dropping well below to stay Class 3. No traction/flotation/gaiters. Not sure if any would have helped anyhow. Too wet/mushy.

How long did it take you? We might be headed up La Plata this weekend.

3 hours to gain the ridge, 5 hours to the summit, 2.5 hrs down to the car (via NW ridge). 10.5 hrs from entrance to exit.

When gaining the terminus of Ellingwood I went farther into the bowl and did some 3rd class pitches instead of humping up the slope of talus, which I think cost me some time but saved some leg power. Also, full disclosure: that ridge has a bad attitude. Be well fed and ready to grind when you go.

PS - The route finding starts the moment you leave the wilderness registry kiosk. Trust your gut and you'll be set.

Thanks for the info. Still determining whether I will give it a go this weekend. I will be up there for sure, but the weather has me questioning whether I will be on that ridge or the standard route.
