From Gibson Creek, the trail starts out pretty easy on dirt and packed snow. Not long into the hike, there is deadfall that caused us to get off-route for a while. Once we found the trail again, it was covered in ankle-deep, loose sugar snow. That was fine until the trail ended and we had to ascend the sugar through sometimes thick trees up to the ridge. Above treeline, there wasn‘t much snow. But our adventures leading up to this caused us to turn back at treeline.

The Gibson Creek TH is accessible by any car.

Like Pt 13,513 and the ridge north of it? Sounds like a good trip Dave. Hope to hit a few peaks with you again in 2013!

We got intermitent looks as clouds passed, but I don't remember getting any good looks at peaks in that direction. I think S.E.'s north ridge was in the way. I can say that there wasn't much snow above treeline, but S.E.'s bare east ridge was not indicative of what I saw around it. I look forward to hiking with you, as well.

Jed, I didn't find it to be difficult in terms of route-finding - we corrected our treefall error fairly quickly. I just didn't want to climb steep ankle-deep, slippery sugar through trees. I had considered going up the Lakes of the Clouds side to the saddle. Even though it's longer, I wonder if it's a better way to access the peaks up there.

was thigh deep, slippery sugar/powder up the very steep south side of Gibson Creek. Not fun. Then the trip down turned into a fiasco too.

is this the most commented on conditions report?     2012-12-12 08:55:00
If not, adding my $.02 to get it there.

Yeah it was a fiasco but at least we got to eat at Pizza Dome. And Sarah still has all of her toes.
