It snowed rained Friday night and sleeted/snowed above treeline. Smaller rocks were covered with a thin sheet of ice in the morning, making for slightly slower going. On the upper mountain, there were fresh snow patches that were easier to get traction on. As the day warmed, the rocks thawed out quickly. Light clouds and fog on and off all day, with a thunderstorm rolling in around 6pm.

Bear above Lake Como?

Hello,

Looks like you had fun. We're going there this weekend to bag at least Blanca/Ellingwood, weather permitting. Did you have any issues (or hear of them) with a bear that is above Lake Como and getting into things?

Thank you!

Jon

Yes, there is definitely a nuisance bear at Lake Como that has clearly gotten many food rewards from tents and backpacks. The bear doesn't seem aggressive or hostile towards people, but he is not afraid to go into your camp in the middle of the day and late at night while you're sleeping. He appears to wander from the bottom of the lake up to the sites just above the lake and then back down. I spotted the bear walking on the main path on the right side of the lake within 40 feet of our site. Lucikly, we were able to kind of scare him off. Later in the day, we were taking a nap in our tents, and the bear was sniffing a day pack (no scent in it) that was between the two tents. We could have touched it. You'll want to take strict bear precautions when camping at the lake or try camping at one of the upper lakes with the same precautions.
