Snowline is just below the trailhead. We hiked the first mile or so in thin snow and then transitioned to skis while still in the forest. The trail is easy to follow since several parties have been in there. There is solid snow cover all the way to the top. We were able to carve turns directly off the summit with little worry of hitting rocks. I have never seen the upper section so well filled in. Now is a good opportunity to ski this one!

Thanks for the update. Planning on doing the Angel later next week. I don’t have skis but I do have snowshoes. Do you think floatation is necessary?

I would recommend at least carrying snow shoes. The crampon feature would be helpful on the ascent and it sure would be nice not to posthole on the way out! We encountered mainly supportive snow, but we started early and were back at the car by 1:00

but was thinking of doing this as a snow climb with crampons/snowshoes. Would crampons work ok in the Angel? Was thinking snowshoes for the approach, crampons for the slope.

crampons vs snowshoes

I don’t snowshoe much so I am no expert on this. My snowshoes have a built in crampon (one set of points, right underfoot). I would not bother taking dedicated crampons if I were on my pair of snowshoes. That being said, it would be wise to carry crampons just in case... Additional info is that the route is not all that steep and a slip would generally be of little consequence (no cliffs, very little rock)
