Went up the East Ridge and came down the West today...West Ridge is pretty good up top, but very easy to lose the trail down low. Not much of a trail from the end of the old road until getting up to the around the 2nd lake. Lots of soft snow due to the heat/warmer nights but patchy enough to the point where snowshoes would be pointless. Take care in routefinding after getting off the old road!

Thanks for the update. Did you happen to check out the condition of BHP?

It’s snowy but looked manageable. I imagine by next week it will be mostly dry, although getting to it may be a slushy mess from the top of the south colony road for a couple more weeks

BHP still had enough snow for slide potential so be careful. but it is melting out quickly.

I am thinking about doing this one on Saturday the 20th. I was wondering if you had a suggestion on which route for someone relatively inexperienced in winter hiking? Also, would it be worthwhile to rent microspikes or something of the like? I’m new to Colorado but excited for some new challenges. Thanks for the reports!

There are ups and downs on each route. East side will be dry but there isn’t a trail and that’s not a great thing for someone without decent route finding skills. The west ride is the standard route and basically has a nice trail to the top, but some of it down low is snow covered and easy to lose. If it’s a warm week and we get a lot of melting I’d say west, if not or you’re comfortable with bushwhacking it I’d say east. In both cases, snowshoes or microspikes shouldn’t be necessary

adamjm – Thanks for the update, do you happen to have any pictures of the snow around the lakes on the west ridge route?

mbnat – Several of us are hiking it on the 20th also...ranging in experience from a first 14er for a couple in our group to about the 40th for a couple others in our group. We are planning to use the west ridge route as well. Here is a link to a good forecast sight I’ve used before...it has seemed pretty accurate in the past for me http://www.mountain–forecast.com/peaks/Humboldt–Peak/forecasts/4287 If this forecast hold true I’m hoping much of the remaining snow near the lakes is gone or easy to walk on/around without microspikes.
