The S Ridge on Snowmass is a fantastic route on almost entirely solid rock. The position on the ridge is excellent, and if you skirt a couple of crux sections to climber's left, the climbing never has to exceed Class 3. I think this is the best route on Snowmass, and would strongly recommend it over the West Slopes.

for the write up on this and the West Slope. Had a failed attempt on the east slope a few years ago and don't want to do the long haul up to the lake again. Been contemplating the S-ridge and/or west ridge route. S-ridge up sounds like the way to go. I don't see many reports of people going back down the S-ridge though. Is returning back down via the S-ridge doable?

I think it would be fine. Like you said, most people descend the West Slopes, but I did read one trip report in which they descended S ridge and they said it was fine. It might be slightly slower than the West Slopes, but again, worth it.
