This trailhead is ranked moderate 4wd. I agree with that. However, good clearance is as important. I drove a stock 1997 Ford Expedition to 11,800 feet, but I think it will make it to 13,800. I saw a stock Jeep Liberty up there, among other vehicles. This road is slow going, and make sure to pick your lines, but most stock SUV's should be fine.

Comparison to West Winfield

Also, this road is as technical as West Winfield, but seemed to be steeper in parts, and a lot rockier. There are a few rocks that require careful driving, and you may have to get out and look for the best line.

Foresters?

I did not see any foresters up there. If you do take a forester, be advised, there were some rocks that were tough to get over, and I don't know if a forester could get past a few of them. Most of the road up to treeline would be passable, but some of those rocks could do some serious damage, and is not wide enough to go around them most of the time. On some of then, I could only get over far enough to get the tires on the rocks. My guess would be that some of them are about a foot tall. If you do, be careful. I hope this helps!
