Status Update
More confusion on the matter of this TH. Today/Yesterday, I took a Jeep Liberty up S Colony lakes for Humboldt. 1.2 miles above the lower TH, there was a deep washed out rut/hole in the road that was certainly difficult to pass. I arrived just as a Subaru Outback turned back in defeat. I personally would NOT drive a Subaru outback/forester up that road. The majority of cars at the upper TH were good clearance Jeeps, full on trucks, and only one vehicle that was smaller. So I suppose it is possible to get them up. At the lower TH was an assortment of passenger cars, CRVs, and Subarus of all makes. Respect this road, there are 2 very rough spots that defeated many Subaru drivers I saw.

Ok people...let’s review. Subaru’s are NOT 4 wd vehicles! They don’t have the ground clearance. They can’t do what a 4wd vehicle does!

My forester has 9.5" clearance and has gotten me up this road 4 times, twice last year. Are you using your 4wd to compensate for something?

Would you take it up to Jaws 1 1/2, like my 4wd? Have you taken it over Pearl Pass, like my 4wd? What about Lead King Basin? Subaru is an excellent urban SUV, but push comes to shove....I’ll take my 1990 Nissan Pathfinder over a Subaru any day. As far as compensation for something...ask your girlfriend!

Its good to know I won’t any major issues taking my 07 Liberty up there in a couple weeks. I’ve taken a Tacoma up there a few years back and remember a couple big ruts, I’m fairly competent ( read i might just be lucky ) when it comes to 4wd roads so far though so I’m hoping this won’t be any different.

PS– I think subies are actually pretty awesome compared to some SUV’s, its the drivers skill that really matters. However, an actual Limited Slip rear differential and 4–Lo are what really get you out of pickles.
