Kite Lake Trailhead
Added by BillMiddlebrook

Location:  Mosquito Range
14ers Served:  Mt. Democrat, Mt. Cameron, Mt. Lincoln, Mt. Bross
Road Type:  2WD, rough dirt road 2   (0=Paved, 6=Very Difficult 4WD)
Rough 2WD dirt to the TH.
Directions:  Take Colorado 9 to Alma. In the middle of town and on the west side of the road, look for a small sign for the road to Kite Lake. Turn here and drive a bit through a residential area. Continue 6 miles to Kite Lake. The last mile of this road can be a bit more rough, but a good-clearance 2WD should still be able to make it when the road is dry. There are restrooms and some camping spots at the trailhead. You must pay a small fee to park/camp at Kite Lake. If you park below (no fee), walk up the road to Kite Lake.
Winter Access:  Closed at the Paris Mill site which is about 3 miles up the road and 3 miles below Kite Lake.

2010-08-31 Road remains open to Kite Lake. There are large potholes and some rocky sections, but it can be driven slowly with a passenger car. Tornadoman
2010-08-26 Construction activity was nonexistent today. The road has lots of potholes but is passable for almost any vehicle. Jim Davies
2010-08-25 I called the town office today, and was told that the pipeline project is on hold due to lack of funding. Jim Davies
2010-08-11 I got the following in an email from Alma. "We made a decission today to stop the repair project for a while. No telling how long. So the road is open all the time right now. " I suggest you contact them if you want updates. BobbyFinn
2010-08-11 I spoke with the ‘city of Alma‘ via email and they said the road is open on weekends and closed intermittently during the weekdays. Like earlier post, on weekdays from 7am to 7pm it is closed when they are working. HunkyDunk
2010-08-02 I just spoke with Alma Public Works and the road to Kite Lake will be open all this week and through the weekend. Kite Lake road-work will resume next Monday (Aug 9th), and the road will again be closed from 7 AM to 7 PM. Gator
2010-07-27 Signs at the jn of Highway 9 state the road to Kite Lake is closed between 0700 and 1900 hours daily. The date the works were completed was not highlighted. tauma
2010-07-23 Went up to Kite Lake today to do Democrat, Cameron and Lincoln. Shortly after turning off of Highway 9 there were signs indicating that the road to Kite Lake will be closed from July 23-30 for repairs. 14erLeah
2010-07-22 Just called the FS & they said the road will be open this weeknd, probably closing it again on Monday. pbakwin
2010-07-15 Road from Alta to Kite lake is open... piped piper
2010-07-11 Drove to Kite Lake with no issues this Sunday AlanC
2010-07-08 Buckskin/Kite Lake Rd. is typically closed between 8:00am to 6:00 or 7:00pm M-F. They are trying to finish the last of 10 breaks in the line that feeds water to the town of Alma. Do not count on these times as firm. They will try to have it finished this week, but wait for the next update. There is a back way in to Buckskin/Kite Lake, but it is NOT marked and I do NOT recommend to anyone without clearance, FWD, and you will end up with scratches to your paint from willows and pine trees. This back road from Park City does not show up if you Google it, but is on the Nat. Geo. Map. Not advisable in the dark. This road is NOT maintained. Pay close heed to mountain features and road directions as you will need your route finding skills to direct you at all the junctions. The Park City side is only wide enough for one vehicle to pass for most of the road and there is one tight switch back that may require larger SUVs or trucks to stop and back up to make the turn. Friends at Al Mart- thank you for your patience and we hope you liked the apples! Hunter
2010-07-08 We were able to enter the road to the trailhead in the morning. But the road was completely impassable when we tried to leave at 12:30. They had dug a hole in the middle of the road. We weren‘t able to leave until 3:30 (they were originally telling us 7:00). They said they will continue to work on the road in the next several days (where it is not possible to pass). It may be wise to heed the road closed signs. At the very least check with the numbers provided below to verify access. dpanter
2010-07-08 Per 7/8/10 inquiry to Town of Alma http://townofalma.com/ -- the road is closed indefinitely for water main repairs. However, it is usually reopened all day on weekends, as well as weekdays briefly in the morning and evening. Anyone planning to use this area should consider a call to either the Ranger Station 719-836-2031, or Town of Alma, for an update. denisseattle
2010-07-02 The road to Kite Lake is open. There was a water main break just off the highway and the road was closed on 6/29. It is open now although there are signs that say ‘road closed‘ and there is a narrow opening on the left side. The sign says the road will be closed on 7/6 - most likely to complete repairs. stackmk
2010-07-01 Just spoke with someone at the South Park Ranger Station (1:10 pm CDT, Thursday, July 1), and the road to Kite Lake (and Kite Lake itself) is open. However, Kite Lake will be closed Tuesday, July 6. No reason given. bassinson
2010-06-29 Road closed from just outside of Alma. unknown re-open date/ reason for closure. KTags
2010-06-09 Road is clear until the last drift right before the pay area starts. Any vehicle should be able to make it. ksegasser
2010-06-05 Road is clear to the last switchback before Kite Lake, which is at about 11,950‘. Several vehicles punched through the last two small drifts today, but the remaining snow on the switchback is substantial. A very good 4x4 rig, with better than average tires could break this snow bank in the afternoon, when it is so soft. There is very, very soft snow around Kite Lake. Grover
2010-05-31 Clear to ~1.5 miles before the TH, then a snow patch for 100 yds or so. I went for it but wallowed about halfway through in a high-clearance pickup truck - had to back out. A hiker coming down said there were a few more similar patches. ElliottDavis
2010-05-23 Snow begins 100 feet beyond the tin building on east side of road. I would guess about 1.2 miles below Kite lake campground. It took me about 35 minutes to reach the lake. Don‘t think you can drive over frozen snow early and make it back out after it heats up. There is a vehicle quite stuck in two foot deep snow. Enjoy, the South Face of Democrat had awesome corn for making turns. slyde55
2010-05-17 lower parking area just before the private land is easily accessible (4wd was helpful, maybe not required in 1-2 spots). From there, continuous snow (not quite passable) to Kite Lake. 5/16 jbraun
2010-05-08 I don‘t know where paris mills is, but the drifts have been broken thru. We made it to the lower parking area just before the private land. From here it was almost continuous snow to kite lake. A jeep drove past the private land and parked on a dirt patch another ~.5 miles 5/8 dubsho3000
2010-04-28 Still closed by a snowdrift at Paris Mill. The drift has been bulldozed but filled back in again. Once it‘s busted out, it will be clear sailing most of the way to Kite Lake. pioletski
2010-02-27 Closed just before Paris Mill junction, about three miles below Kite Lake. Easy driving conditions to closure, with good parking at closure. Dancesatmoonrise
