2010-02-14 On Sun 2/14/10 the road was snowpacked with progressively deeper snow 4 miles from the trailhead. Alan Arnette
2009-12-20 Was up there Sun 12/20/09. Road closed a good 4.5 to 5 miles from the trailhead. Long walk! Tried to make a go of it but the road was deep with snow. Have a 4wd Pathfinder. oldschool
2009-12-05 Passable in a n all wheel drive. Sunday, there was snow, so things may have changed. sgladbach
2008-12-08 No problems getting there yesterday, 12/7, with my standard jeep liberty. About 2-3 inches of packed snow on the road. However, I hear its suppose to snow today. You could easily get to the Mt. Massive trailhead yesterday too, but I‘m not sure about N. Half Moon Creek. SteamboatDog
2008-11-21 There is a lot of packed snow/ice up the the TH, but with some careful driving any car should be fine to get to the TH J2TheZ
2008-08-13 Road is fine for all cars. Pretty bumpy in spots for small cars but still doable. stlouishiker
2008-06-23 My wife and I headed up on Sunday 6/22/08. The TH is completely snow free and the road in is in great shape. No worries on bringing a compact car up there as of today. Enjoy.  GAGuy
2008-06-18 I hiked Elbert on Saturday (6-14-0. The TH is completely clear of snow. Geogirl
2008-06-07 Drove to the TH yesterday as I was in the area. Road is dry all the way to the TH. I drove about 2.5 miles further and it was dry all the way past as well. Kojones
2008-05-21 There are patches of snow on the road but only 2 or 3 of them are big enough to maybe stop you. Drove a Honda Civic about halfway between Halfmoon creek campground and the Elbert TH. Some guys in a Jeep were going up on my way down and said they had checked it out earlier and were going to drive to the Massive TH. Bring a shovel and with only a few minutes digging you could make it with any vehicle. thunderinacircle
2008-03-03 The dirt road to Halfmoon creek is plowed for about a half a mile after you turn. Instead of a "1 mile hike to the trail head" it ended up taking us a little over 4 hours. kylerlott
2007-06-10 Hiked up Elbert yesterday. Trailhead is almost like a small highway now. Completely free of snow! 2WD's are able to access easily. Good luck!!! mringkeith
2007-05-25 Dry all the way, no problem (a rather fun drive) in a 4wd pickup, never used 4wd though. AlexMack
2007-01-16 According to the directons to Halfmoon Creek. When you make a right turn and get on the good dirt road you can go for about 1 mi to where the snow plowing stops. You can park in this area. To the trailhead it is about another 4 miles, Take your snowshoes. JERRYZ
2006-08-09 Aug.4 Another car friendly TH. Bill's directions are right on the numbers. renobob
2006-05-11 Road open to TH. 4wd easily and most 2WD will have no problems ADKjack
2005-06-13 The road is open and clear all the way to the trailhead. chicago transplant
2005-05-01 I drove the Halfmoon Creek Road on Wednesday April 27th. At that time it was clear of snow and passable for 2WD vehicles to the Campground (1 mile short of trailhead). It has snowed recently and there may be some snow or muddy sections along the road, but the main winter snowpack has melted out up to the campground. 4WD vehicles could continue, but there were large sections of slushy snow across the road, sometimes a foot deep or more. chicago transplant
2005-02-18 The Halfmoon road is closed in winter - typically only a short distance from County Road 11. It normally melts out in early May. Check with the U.S. Forest Service for TH access. BillMiddlebrook
