Posted By: RWSchaffer Info: The road to the trailhead was clear and dry, as was the entire parking area. Winter road closure remained in effect about a hundred feet above the Yale trailhead parking area.
Posted By: JasonCrane Info: After the 2 snow storms this week, CR306 held several inches of new snow on Friday morning, 4/28. However, snow was mostly melted out by early afternoon, 4/28 & easily drivable. TH parking should be completely melted-out by Sat., 4/29.
Posted By: yared0319 Info: Some ice on 306, but no snow accumulation. Could drive it easy in a low clearance, 2WD vehicle.
Posted By: aholle88 Info: Cottonwood pass still open to summit. That could change after this next storm though, ice/snow covering shady sections of road above Denny creek.
Posted By: TheSpaceForce Info: Trailhead open, restrooms open and have toilet paper. Road closed west of trailhead.
Posted By: wjaygee Info: Trailhead is up and running! The road is plowed until just after the trailhead parking and is easy to navigate with a 2WD vehicle. Just watch out for ice patches. Denny Creek serves as a snowmobile staging ground station in the winter. There are two areas of the TH which are plowed: one to the west and one to the east. The smaller east area is the better bet for passenger vehicles; the larger west area is shaped in a kind of circle, the middle of which is used for people to park their trucks and snowmobile trailers. The trail that goes to Yale starts from the west area but is only ~200 feet away from the east area.
Posted By: KevinInFoCo Info: Road and parking lot completely dry, very little snow around anywhere. One bathroom was locked, the other was open and stocked with tp.
Posted By: vmunson Info: It’s sort of a holiday so got to the TH at 6am but it wasn’t even a third full. Bathrooms were stocked with toilet paper but nothing else positive to say about them! Nice that this parking lot is paved and actually has spaces, even room for trailers and an overflow lot.
Posted By: Eagle Eye Info: CR306 is still wide open and cleared for 12 miles, all the way to Denny Creek TH.
Posted By: sdkeil Info: Cottonwood pass closed for the season and gated at the Denny Creek TH. Parking area is plowed and clear of snow.
Posted By: hogantheepic Info: Road is completely clear all the way to Denny Creek, summer trailhead is open for business.
Posted By: HikesInGeologicTime Info: Road is maintained to trailhead. Packed snow/ice in parts, but 2WD accessible. Restrooms are open.
Posted By: Jay521 Info: The Chaffee county website shows that CO306 is closed a few miles beyond Denny Creek. This is NOT true - it is closed at the normal winter closure at Denny Creek.
Posted By: Corey17 Info: Plowed and accessible to any vehicle. There was some fresh snow on it in the morning, but it was melted and dry by the time we drove down in the afternoon. Several impressive avalanche chutes off Sheep mountain slid this year, one substantially hitting the road. The debris pile was certainly impressive!
Posted By: dennywitte Info: Denny Creek TH is accessible from CR306, where the road is closed for the winter. Hiked to Hartenstein Lake today from Denny Creek Trailhead. Good boot pack until Mt Yale Trail cuts off. Better have snowshoes after that! Lots of snow above 11000 feet. Picture below is just before the Mt Yale Trail cuts off to the right.
Posted By: dennywitte Info: Access to the standard route for Mt Yale from the Denny Creek TH is now available again. According to https://flh.fhwa.dot.gov/projects/co/cottonwood/ Where does the closure start and end? The Cottonwood Pass road is closed from the Denny Creek Trailhead parking lot (Chaffee County side) to the intersection of CR 209 and CR 742 (Gunnison County side). Access from Buena Vista will be open to the Cottonwood Lake area, Avalanche Trailhead Parking Lot, Denny Creek Trailhead parking lot, and businesses along Chaffee County Road 306. When work is occurring, traffic may experience delays up to 20 minutes.
Posted By: CheapCigarMan Info: From the Federal Highway’s website: https://flh.fhwa.dot.gov/projects/co/cottonwood/ "Cottonwood Pass will remain closed the rest of 2018. The road will be open to traffic next year, on or around Memorial Day Weekend."
Posted By: Cygnus X1 Info: Denny Creek trailhead is still closed. Road is closed for construction right after Avalanche trailhead.
Posted By: cshaw9193 Info: Road to Denny still closed at the Avalanche trailhead - ended up taking that route instead. Longer and harder but beautiful!
Posted By: sawyervillers Info: Road to Denny Creek is closed. However...I saw several hikers going up from Avalanche to camp and climb Yale the normal route. About a 60 minute walk from Avalanche, but no shade. YMMV
Posted By: scottda Info: Cottonwood Pass/CR306 will be CLOSED at the Avalanche Gulch TH beginning Monday June 18, 2018. |
