After that to the pass, there are occasional parts that have ruts and big rocks to maneuver but not too bad. I drove in a Subaru Crosstrek and was ok but picked my lines carefully. I would think that with more Jeep-ATV use the road may start getting in worst shape or with the next rain. | ||||
Posted By: Chelsea Info: Weston Pass is Subaru-able from both the east & west. The west side is a bit rougher, rockier, & narrower, but still doable in a Crosstrek or similar. The spur to Gold Basin is in rough shape. Big ruts and boulders. True 4x4 needed if you go that way. | ||||

Posted By: aholle88 Info: Dry, no mud. Heard varied reports about the road condition but I did not think it was bad at all. In fact, much smoother and easier (on the east/Park side) than the road to Fourmile Crk TH for Sherman. Just a few sections of potholes that can sneak up on you if moving quickly. Some rocks up the last 1-2 miles when the road gets steeper which was equivalent to the rocky section up 4mile past Leavick. | ||||

Posted By: Trotter Info: Weston pass from the east side (Fairplay side) has gotten pretty bad. I’d still say a sedan COULD make it, but very slowly in some parts. Anything higher clearance then a car can make it, but still slowly in some parts. Its the upper half of the road that has significant potholes, dips, and rocks. I wouldn’t take a sedan up that side. | ||||

Posted By: tauma Info: Highway 285 is being repaved and is diverted 2 miles south of Fairplay onto highway 9. Access on 285 beyond that detour is for local traffic only. However if you stop at the detour and explain your intentions to access Weston Pass they will issue you a permit (photo attached) because the repaving has advanced beyond the turn off to Weston Pass. | ||||
Posted By: tauma Info: As of today Weston Pass remains closed for fire suppression. Fireworks are fine at Copper Mountain on 11/08/2018 (world date) so go figure. That said Park County is a little more arid than Summit County. | ||||
Posted By: kingshimmers Info: Coming from the west (Leadville side), winter road plowing stops ~6.5 miles below the pass. There is a pullout for parking here. Should you choose to continue, know there are very few pullouts to turn around and/or park until the pass itself. The unplowed part of the road starts off patchy and icy and becomes gradually deeper and still mostly icy. There are deep soft spots the further in you get. Saw one stuck Jeep ~2 miles in and multiple other places beyond that where vehicles had obviously been dug or towed out. It would be difficult for any vehicle to make it past where the road turns from east to southeast. Some patchy parts within 1-2 miles of the pass as well. The pass itself is windblown with patchy snow coverage. Snowed a bit overnight on the 9th which helped to cover some of the icy snowmobile tracks on the road, but don’t know how long that will last. | ||||
Posted By: gurlyclimber Info: From the East there is a large patch of snow blocking access to the summit but you can park just a short walk away from the top. It was too deep for my Jeep. From the West, there was snow as far as the eye could see from the top of South Peak. It doesn’t look like the pass has been traveled to the top from either direction for a while. | ||||
Posted By: gbutler1492 Info: From the Fairplay side I drove past the Rich Creek TH in 2-wheel drive. There were other cars that had been there a few days previous. To park in the parking area I had to use 4x4 to get back out. Just past Rich Creek I had to go to 4x4 to get through some drifts, Weston Pass campground and TH is totally snowed in as it is on the southern side of the valley. I continued past the campground a couple miles before I got to a drift I couldn‘t make it through. That was just about 3.5 miles from the top of Weston Pass. | ||||

About 2 miles west of the pass, there is a bit of an ice flow (see picture) that looks much like the one on the Princeton Road - probably 100 feet long. With chains or studded snow tires, it should be doable but as I had neither, I opted to park and hike Finnback Knob from there. Didn‘t go down the west side of the pass beyond FS150 so no idea what the conditions there are. | ||||
