Having failed at an early season bid for Lindsey's summit back in April, I was bound and determined to make good on the year's second attempt.
I was especially determined as I didn't want to let our daughter (named with the correct spelling, i.e. Lindsay) down on my second attempt this year.
By the way, who do you talk to to get a peak re-named? Hmmm... on second thought with all the hoopla about renaming another peak in the Sangre range maybe it's best to just keep this one to myself!
First view of Blanca at sunrise.
Having come in April when everything was still covered in snow I was pleasantly surprised at the beautiful scenery on the way up.
Past the boulder field on your left the trail starts to gain elevation. At this point the river is on your right and the trail goes through a beautiful valley to the upper basin.
In the upper basin and getting a first look at shy Lindsey (below).
It was hazy in the early morning due to the recent fires in New Mexico. This didn't make for the best hiking conditions, but did seem to lend something to the photos.
Reaching the top of the upper basin, Lindsey is to the left. The rock formation to the right (below) shows where a friend and I took shelter and were ultimately pushed back in April due to some ridiculously strong winds (60 mph, 70...?).
Finally, on the ridge and getting the first good look at the peak! The class 2+ gulley looked a little intimidating, but was actually no problem once you get up and in it. A little steep and loose but otherwise no real problem.
Good news: having the summit to yourself. Bad news: having to snap your own portrait.
A better photo below shows all three neighboring 14ers (Blanca, Ellingwood and Little Bear).
On the way out I noticed a log "bridge" just past the standard river crossing which kept my feet dry.
And a last look at the majesty of the Sangres...

I did this route a couple days ago, and I was really taken with how beautiful it was, especially in that basin. I can see myself returning to repeat that route many times in the future, partly for the climb, and partly for the eye candy. Next time, try the ridge route instead of the couloir- a little more pleasant way to the top. Great job!
Great to see a ”real” summit picture! I hiked up Lindsey two weeks ago, and although I made the summit, it was completely foggy - couldn't see anything. Nice pictures.
