Where is everybody? Grays & Torreys - Standard Route

I wasn’t sure if a solo trip up Grays & Torreys on the standard route was overkill for a TR, but anyone planning to climb these two anytime soon might find it helpful…. And everyone likes pictures…

Two things stuck out in my mind on Saturday… 1. The Kelso Ridge route off to my right looked awesome and 2. Where are all the people?

The only humans I passed all day were the 2 climbers (kushrocks and jameseroni) leading the charge on the Kelso Ridge route. There were a few others out there on the standard route, but they started after me. If the weather is cooperating (and it sure was), I would think this is probably the best time of year to hit these peaks.

I had heard that Highway 189 right off a 70 was closed this time of year so I was anticipating adding an extra 3 miles each way onto my trip. However, when I got there, the only thing stopping me was this sign so I proceeded on.

didn't phase the jeep (notice the timestamp)

An hour and half later (I had some technical difficulties, my fault) I was about a ¾ to a mile from the summer TH.

This is where I started - 7 AM

Below are the guys who took the Kelso Ridge route - They summited Torreys at the same time I hit Grays summit, we met in the middle of the saddle, and then they summited Grays when I hit Torreys...

Dillon,

Yes that was Kushrocks and me that you met in the saddle. You're spot on when you say this is the best time of the year to get out! The proof is in the pudding! We had an awesome time and also came into contact with those two skiers, who helped us to dig out Ryan's car after he got it stuck. It took us about an hour to get moving again. I don't remember passing you on the way down, maybe you made it down before us? Anyhow, if you have some of those photos you took of us on Kelso that'd be great. Nevermind - I see them now. I must've scrolled past. What a beautiful day! - Nice to meet you, Sir

James

where is everybody?     2011-12-19 12:45:36
Felt the same way not seeing a single person on Manitou Incline and Barr Trail all the way to Barr Camp on Saturday. Everybody was sleeping in or busy out Christmas shopping...

James - sorry I forgot your username! I'll fix it in my report. Thanks for responding to this. I may have some other pics. I'll take a look and email them to you if I do. I think I cut across on the Torreys route on the way down and may have already been passed you guys. I walked past your 2 cars in the AM and thought one might be stuck. I had a rough time where that tree had fallen! Good to meet you too man. Oh and I see you other post now. Yeah my legs hurt today!

Brian - yep it was pretty low key all over. See you in a week.
