Sayres Benchmark - NW Ridge and Flank

Climbed Sayres benchmark from the junction of the start of the Sayres Gulch Road. Intent was to take switchbacking mine road but missed gate at 0:dark:30, which resulted in a mile of travel up Sayres Gulch and then a cut 90 degrees left to climb 1000 vertical to intercept the mine road on ridge line proper. Followed the mine road up to nearly Pt. 13,460, traversed the connecting ridge ridge and dropped to the 13,000' saddle and then up to the summit proper. Return route did drop to mine below 13k saddle (about 12,400) with subsequent traverse of the 12,500 contour (very light trail) to road intercept and descent back past cabin and then down the switchbacking mine road for no other reason than to see where and how it was missed in the dark of the morning.

No snowshoes, axe, crampons, gaiters were needed. Snow crossings are minimal and but for 50 feet are all avoidable. The first stream crossing (canyon) is via a USFS bridge, the crossing of Sayres Creek on the descent was almost dry feet, but so close to the end of the hike that it really didn't matter.

This report provides an alternative to the endless switchbacks offered by the standard route from this side and a summer view of the route reported in April of 2009.
