Early June on the Western Slopes

Looking at recent trip reports and weather forecasts, I found myself planning a trip for my 2nd 14er this year. Weather forecasts for Mt Massive where favorable (considering Early June)with 30% chance of snow/rain starting at 1500hrs, and winds forecast at 15 to 30 kts .

The road conditions up to the Trail Head for the South Western Slopes trails was pretty good with dry conditions. The road past the junction was not bad but 4WD vehicle is the low risk approach. We arrived at the SW Slopes TH at 06:00 am.

We hit the trail at 06:05am. The trail all the way up to tree line was in good condition - and dry. Its very easy to follow. This was my first time on Mt Massive and I was not familiar with the trail - but its well maintained and easy to follow all the way to the summit.

We reached the summit around 11:00 and ate lunch and just soaked it all in for about 45 min.
Weather was great - a little overcast and winds around 5kt or less on the top ridges.

We enjoyed the hike up and back and made it back to the TH at 15:00 - we weren't pushing it and rather enjoyed it.

This approach is much shorter than the standard route. A little steep in spots but very rewarding.
Overall, great hike!
