| High 13ers from Stewart Creek - Too long for one day |
My initial idea was to climb Stewart, Organ, and Phoenix from the Stewart Creek TH in one day. The 28.5 mile RT outing with over 11,000' total vertical gain was too much for me, and I ended up camping in Canon Diablo before summiting Phoenix Peak. This was still an achievement, given the poor weather and time spent bushwhacking in the willows and the forest brush. I thought that I may need to camp, so it did mean having to carry a tent, sleeping bag, stove, and food for the whole way except the RT ascent up Phoenix from Canon Diablo. My recommendation to anyone planning to do these peaks is to bring a GPS. It was essential to me to find the right peak and to navigate through unknown and unmarked territory. With good weather, knowing the route ahead of time, and going fast and light, these peaks "could" be done in a long, tiring day.
