After planning a trip to Salida for the weekend to attend the Beer Fest this past weekend (which was Saturday 1pm-5pm), my boyfriend and I decided to go up Shavano and Tabeguache early in the morning before trying some Colorado brews. That said, we needed to be down in town by 1pm so we planned on traveling light and fast... which easily turned into a "trail running" day.
We drove up to the trailhead from Boulder on Friday and arrived in the area at 11pm. We set camp a mile below the TH. Woke up shortly after 5am, had breakfast, and were on the trail at 6am (although we had originally planned on starting at 5:30am).
We started with an easy jog although 1/2 mile in it gets pretty rocky. We jogged as possible and walked the rockier areas. We got up to treeline pretty fast where we caught up to several other groups.
Once past treeline, you hit a LONG stretch of trail along the southeast slope, which just seemed fun to run. My lungs weren't too happy with my attempt at running, but we were able to get up to the saddle by doing the typical run/walk strategy. The final push to the summit of Shav was less runner friendly and we just walked up it.
We summitted Shavano at 8:20am, took a short break and continued on.
I felt a little wobbly, not sure if it had been the fact that we had gained elevation fast, so I was careful coming down, but managed to efficiently come up to Tabeguache. It seemed like it took me significantly more time to come down to the saddle, than climbing back up to Tab. We didn't really jog this section either since it seemed a little unsafe...
We summited Tab 50mins after we left Shavano. Again, took a short break, had some snacks, water and left the summit.
It took us 40mins to re-summit Shavano where now, there was many many more people... we took another break, a little longer this time (roughly 15mins), and took some pictures for other people.
After this, we came off the summit pretty fast and on to the saddle where we started running all the way down to the trailhead. It took us an hour and 30 minutes to get from the summit of Shav to the trailhead... Not too shabby, and way too much fun.
We were back at the car by 11:45 which turned out to be a great since as soon as we got to the car, it started raining... although we had heard some thunder once we got to treeline (sounded bad!). We hoped everyone got off the mountain safely since there were SO many people still going up as we were running down.
Needless to say, we made it back to Salida right on time and were drinking beer by 1:15pm. The weekend ended with a fun 14 mile mountain bike ride at Methodist Mountainon Sunday!
