 The Men Get Massive

Mt. Massive - Southwest Slopes
8.0 Miles, 3950' gain
North Halfmoon Creek Trailhead

On the previous day I had escorted 3 lovely ladies up Grays Peak and Torreys Peak for their first fourteener experience. As part of our "deal" I agreed to take the husbands of 2 of these ladies on a 14er the following day, giving them all a chance for the 14er experience. I selected Mt. Massive for the guys' first 14er, and it actually turned out to be an excellent choice in my opinion. Nathan loves rock, and wanted to try something class 3. I was afraid that with the altitude factor (which ended up being a non-factor) the class 3 route might be a little much.

Getting Higher...

Summit!?!

Surprise marmot encounter:

Postgame meal: Subway in Buena Vista. Quick and tasty.

It turns out I underestimated the capabilities of these guys. Nathan could have smoked me, and Avery could keep up all day. I guess it's another strong vote for physical conditioning and exercise as being important in handling the altitude. These "noobies" were able to complete Massive in exactly 4 hours round trip. We had decent weather and didn't run into any snags- although we had rain and hail at 11 AM. The trail was pretty scenic and is currently in excellent condition. Our time was commendable for a big guy and two rookies. What more could you ask for?
