 Holy Cross Campout/Summit

After arriving in Denver on Friday, 8/31, staying at the Estes Y camp that evening, Long's on Saturday, 9/1 and back to the Y that afternoon/evening, we headed to the Half Moon trailhead Sunday morning from Estes. We pulled into the trailhead at around 2PM on Sunday, 9/2, a fairly opportune time as the parking lot and road were packed but hikers were beginning to return so we ended up getting a great spot in the parking lot.

We left the trailhead around 2:30pm, headed for East Cross Creek, where we planned to set up camp, spend the night, summit and hike out on Labor Day, 9/3. In addition to me the group included Greg (Prairie Village, KS), Tim (hikesafelyalot - Little Rock), Daniel (Richmond, TX).

As we approached East Cross Creek we meet some folks heading back to the trailhead they suggested camp site #2, which we took. It was great, close to the creek, plenty of flat ground and a huge rock area perfect for cooking and dinner.

We got up around 5:30am, coffee, breakfast and then packed up so we would be ready to go on the way out. We left the camp site around 7:30am, summitted around 11:00am and were back to the camp site around 2:00pm. The hike back up to Halfmoon Pass was a tough one, especially the first half. By 4:00pm we were back at the trailhead and on to the Leadville Hostel with plans for La Plata on Tuesday.

We were all very impressed with the work being done by a group of about 12 young adults from the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps. They were making many needed improvements to the trail and were doing a great job, lots of hard work. I am sure their work was associated with the Colorado Fourteener Initiative (CFI), another great organization.
