Eagle Mountain (10,462)
Stats: 5.5 Miles 2000 feet
Partner: My sister Dorothy
Eagle Mountain is a prominent looking peak in the southeast corner of the La Garitas. It is viewed by many driving to Wolf Creek Pass and Creede, though it is climbed by few. An excellent forecast and a scouting mission to some 8ers in the area gave me all the beta I needed for the peak.
My sister and I headed out from "La Ventana", a natural arch on a volcanic dyke, about nine miles north of Del Norte. The first half of hike is up and over some shallow ridges and around some impressive volcanic structures. Travel is easy and it is nearly impossible to get lost in the open terrain. Especially with the monolith that is Eagle Mountain ahead of you and the mile long dyke behind you. It is not until the final 600 feet of climbing that the hike becomes more of a grunt. I had low hopes of a great summit view, considering how many busts I've had on 10ers before. Eagle Mountain does not disappoint.
One of the things I cherish most about hiking is the return trip from the summit. When the weather is good and time is not a factor this becomes my time to reflect and to enjoy the beauty, both subtle and grand, of our great country. I am away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, I am free of mobile devices which enslave so many, I am not connected to the World Wide Web, but connected to the earth, I am at home in a most primal state, I have heard the call of the wild and answered.

My sister is introduced to San Juan talus
For the remainder of the journey I had this song stuck in my head, so I might as well get it stuck in your head as well. Thank you NPR for re-introducing me to the genius of Trent Reznor.
I'll leave you with a few shots of a Kansas sunrise and sunset
