Some fun days in the hills

Grays Peak 14,278 Horseshoe Bowl - 6/8/2013 - Horsing Around

After hitting Santa Fe we headed up the Peru Creek Road for a little recon of road conditions and where exactly the closure was. After that I headed to Boulder and we moved a load to the new house in Edgewater. We woke up in the flatlands and headed up the hill for some action on Grays. We got almost all the way to the closure gate. I have some issues with my truck right now and need to repair the CV joints so my 4 wheel drive will work. Even without it we made it really far back there on Peru Creek Road... More words and Pics http://makingturns.com/?p=2868

Whale Peak 13,078 - 6/9/2013 - Gibson's Gully - A Backcountry Peak Cherry

After skiing Grays we headed to Frisco and had some sandwiches at Spinelli's. They make a mean cheesesteak. We then headed to Allison's place and had a little nap. After that we headed to Hall Valley Ranch road and the Gibson Lake Trailhead to meet up with Danny and Brooke. It has been a while since I'd skied with Danny, I believe it was "Anderson Peak" almost exactly a year ago. Since that time he and his wife Brooke have had a baby and gotten all career oriented. Good things when you're new parents. On a whim I gave Danny a call and just by chance the baby was being watched by the grandparents that weekend and they were out camping and having some adult time. They found a sweet campsite and we hung out eating venison, prosciutto, cheese and smores while we caught up... More pics and words http://makingturns.com/?p=2895

Torreys Peak 14,267 - Emperor Couloir - 6/13/2013 - Oh My God We're SOOO Late

So after finally finishing my move to Edgewater I needed a day to rest. Kim called and told me that she was looking to ski. A plan was hatched and the target was the Emperor. I picked her up at 5:30 and we headed up the hill after a quick stop at Amantes South for some coffee and croissants. We drove to the snow bank up Stevens Gulch road and started hiking. After reaching the actual trailhead we got on the trail and made decent time up the mountain. Near the base of Grays North Slope we ran into a few skier. I asked where he was going and was told "you're late." "Not for north facing" was my reply. He told me of the all the rock fall and told me to be careful and be safe. There was a level of attitude in this conversation that really rubbed me the wrong way. Skiers share their lines with each other. Great you think it's too late what did you see and where were you that made you think this. Where did you see the rock fall. Nothing you said helped me at all. I saw no evidence on the way up and across Grays North Face to support your notion that we were in any way late. The sun was blocked by haze to the east, there was a light breeze on the aspect we planned to ski and most importantly the snow was stay cool and wasn't melting rapidly. There wasn't any water build up and squeezing water out of the snow was impossible. Were you listening to the mountain or your preconceived notion of when to turn around? Well I'm glad we didn't listen to you dude. Rant over but please people drop the attitude in the mountains. If you're wrong you look like a jackass.... Mount Sniktau 13,234 - Northeast Bowl - Get a moving - 6/15/2013

After moving all my stuff it was now time to move Allison's stuff. We got most of it done Thursday and Friday so we figured we could get in a ski on Saturday. We headed up with 2 cars and left a shuttle ride at the Herman's Gulch trailhead. We then drove up to Loveland Pass and started from there. It only took about an hour to summit and we were skiing super nice corn shortly there after. The vert for the ski was only about 1600.... more pics here - http://makingturns.com/?p=2980
