| Climbing the Cross |
I have been eyeing the Cross Couloir since 1997 when I first read about it in Dawson's guide. At that time I was living in Ohio and only dreaming of Colorado. Since moving here in 2001, I have often thought about this route. However, either the weather, my conditioning or some other excuse got in the way. This past June was finally the time.
We hiked up the basin and camped at about 11,900 feet--just north and below The Bowl of Tears. This made for a nice, short morning walk to the couloir. The climbing was great. Not too steep--at least for us. We descended the Angelica Couloir. The snow there was hard and icy. I kept thinking of Dawson's mantra--climb up it if you plan to descend it.
We made it down safely and quickly packed up the Megamid camp and headed down. On the way up to Halfmoon Pass( not a bad hike up at all, really), we were treated to great views of all the mountains in the area. I highly recommend putting this climb on your list is you love climbing snow as much as I do.
