Great day doing "the quad"! |
---|
It has become a tradition for my wife and I to hike at least 1 14er per year since 2009. This year, we wanted to attempt "the quad" and try hitting Democrat, Cameron, Lincoln, and Bross. On Saturday we drove from Denver to Fairplay where we stayed at the Hand Hotel Bed & Breakfast. It was actually just "bed" for us since we would be out of there long before the "breakfast" portion would kick in. After we checked in, we enjoyed an amazing sunset seen from the back deck at the Hand: We left Fairplay just before 6am and started our hike at 6:30. Here is the view of Democrat shortly after we left the parking lot at Kite Lake Trailhead: There were numerous tents set up and quite a few cars in the parking lot. But, we got there before a majority of campers woke up so it seemed like it was a very light crowd. Looking back toward the trailhead just as the sun started to come up over the valley: Looking up toward the Democrat summit: At 8:15am, we made it to the top of Democrat! Next up, Cameron and Lincoln. View of these two from Democrat: Our only wildlife seen was a pika on the way up Cameron: At 10:00am we hit the summit of Cameron! You can see Quandary on the left and Lincoln on the right. We summitted Quandary just about one year ago and was our previous 14er hike. Next up was Lincoln and we hit this summit at 10:30am: Looking south toward our next goal and our first summit of the day is on the right: There was a developing thunderstorm just beyond Bross that had us worried for a bit: There were some rumbles of thunder that came from this storm as we made our way toward Bross, but thankfully it quickly moved southeast toward Fairplay. At 11:30am we hit the summit of Bross! The girl who took the photo didn't stand close enough to read the sign we were holding. It had all four peaks with their elevations on it. I had to edit in basically what was printed on the sign. On the trail back to the Kite Lake Trailhead. It is quite a descent! We had a few problems making the descent down all this scree...wife even slipped and got a nice bruise on her arm. It's quite a challenging portion of the hike! My wife in front of the beautiful waterfall on the descent back to Kite Lake: We arrived back at the parking lot at 1:15pm! On the drive back to Denver...gotta reward yourself after a hike like this! This was one great day! The weather held out, it was not crowded but had just enough people that it was still a good time. It's also a great rush being able to say that we "bagged" four 14ers in one day! |
