 James Peak via Continental Divide

My cousin came to town from Minnesota and after a week of hiking around Morrison and Boulder until he felt well enough to hike up James Peak. I tried James Peak in January but I got rather uncomfortable in some dark clouds and heavy wind. So Friday the 13th had clear skies, little wind and much potential. We parked off the forest road towards Loch la Mod and went up the Continental Divide.

Route finding was very easy and simple, not like Crater Lakes at East Portal. Only a few snow traverses on the CDT, but we were glad to have gaiters and poles. The hike up the peak was 1/2 snow field and 1/2 trail but that's because we picked up the trail from closer to Saint Marys than we probably could have but we sought refuge behind some scrub bushes to eat sammiches from D'Deli. Ugh, Farmer sammich is soooo good.

Nick did not enjoy the snow fields and couldn't understand why people hiked straight up them instead of taking a 100 yard left jog to the trail, which I didnt get either but whatever, to each their own. The last mile really put a damper on his lungs. All week he talked about how he does crossfit and nothing can stop him

From the summit we went down to the Loch instead of across the CDT again. From the Loch to the last seasonal gate it was a big snow field but it was hard packed. No postholing, unlike the CDT which put my legs through to me arse more than a few times.

An easier hike everyone should do, because ... why not?!

This is a great hike and I hope you enjoy my photos! (next report will have original photos posted for better quality and not saved from my Facebook post)
