Bierstadt, Sawtooth, Evans |
Departed Guanella pass at 9:45a towards Bierstadt. Super muddy, but the boardwalk helps. Man it was crowded, especially since it was a Monday! Summited Bierstadt in a little over an hour and headed towards Sawtooth. I was already a little wary of the high winds, and with my epic little dog in tow (who is an accomplished scrambler but hadn't yet been on a class 3 climb) I was only about 60/40 whether we'd actuàlly cross the Sawtooth. I'd read about the route and looked at all the pictures here on 14ers, and it kind of sounded like some tough scrambling but that the only really dangerous part was the steep scree at the end. That crazy ridge took us 3 hours and a lot of work! By the time we got to the last part, that's supposed to be the difficult part, we had already done much worse; much more technically difficult and places that felt much more dangerous. I did have ropes and a harness on Lu, they mostly got in her way but it gave me peace of mind. I did have to help her down a couple times, in spots where you lower yourself through a crack but its too far to jump. After finishing Sawtooth, the trail to Evans felt long and hard. The weather held but the wind was relentless. We were aiming for the gulley to come back through the willows, coming from Mt Evans the gulley is more to the right than you think its going to be. The willows part, the trail is almost totally washed out with snowmelt, you cross the marshy part until you get to the hill, then ultimately you'll go all the way around the hill until heading southish towards the Bierstadt trail. You'll see the parking lot long before you run into the Bierstadt trail, but there's not a better way to cross. All of its totally flooded, get ready for some seriously cold feet because there's no way to avoid it. Returned to the parking lot at 8:30p. The site won't upload pictures directly from my phone (it thinks they're too big) so that will have to wait.
