 North Ridge, and Creek crossing

Title: North Ridge, Modified Ridge, Gulley
Start 6:00
Top: 10:00
Stayed 30 min
Down 2:30
My son Landon and I were going to hike Columbia, but saw from trip reports there was a lot of snow. We then thought about Lindsey, hearing here was less snow there, and great trip report by earlier that spoke to conditions.
We left Walsenburg at 4:15 and after arriving at trailhead started at 6:00 am. The road is clear all the way to the trailhead. Rough two wheel drive road... Well not an expert on the scale, but the last couple of miles where not pretty with plenty of rocks. Good clearance is the key. My Honda Element did ok, but I would have preferred something with better ground clearance. Out of 18 cars at the trail head only two were two wheel drive.

The hike starts out fine.
The creek crossing: go to the left. Two fellows placed a log down, and my son placed two more, so you can cross without getting wet, or having to take shoes off.

Creek, go left three logs cross without getting wet!

The upper creek crossing though really awful two weeks ago, is not bad at all now. There is still snow in the woods, but you are able to miss most of the snow going around.

We had some clouds, light, and really no wind to speak of. On the ridge. My son took the ridge as soon as he could and went all the way across. I was unsure if it went all the way, so went back down. I arrived at the base of the gulley. I did not like the looks of it, though saw four people going up the gulley, which now has very little snow.

The Ridge, little snow in the gulley

I avoided the gulley and went straight up to meet my son. Very stable rock, with class three plenty of places to rest, which was good for me.

At the top past the false summit, wonderful day for a hike!

We were going to take the ridge back, but turned to earlier and ended up in the gulley. Stay to the left going down for more stable rock (right going up.) No one was coming up so we got on the scree and slid down, went much faster, side stepping sliding, till back to the lower ridge.

Mine: We saw the mine on the way up and son said we should take a look on the way down, so we did. It is worth the stop, if for nothing else to get inside a cool cave away from the heat! The cave turns a few times and goes back maybe 35 feet.
