 wind beneath my wings

Billy Goat Ben and Mountain Molly left denver at 5am. No traffic through 285 and unlike years past we found CR 8 no problem. CR8 is completely clear of snow and debris, we made it all the way to the trail head in our Honda Civic. Being a Sunday I was skeptical about parking but when we arrived at 7am there were still plenty of spots. We parked next to a family who was taking their 3yr old son Colby up his first 14er!

They hit the trail head shortly after we did.

We busted out, on to the trail head at 7:10 and summited Democrat at 8:50. There is patches of snow throughout the mountain but nothing major, and in some cases provides more stable footing than the loose rock. The wind was treacherous at the top of Democrat but nothing unordinary for 14,000 ft. As we headed up Mt. Cameron however, the wind picked up and started to howl. The general rule is, if the wind physically moves you it's around 50mph. It was getting their.

When we summited Cameron the wind was well above 50mph and gaining strength. Others were turning back but Billy Goat Ben and Mountain Molly headed on for Mt. Lincoln. Summit of Lincoln; also ridiculously windy. At this point we were eager to head on down to Mt. Bross because the trail is shielded by Cameron's big bald round dome!

We summited Mt. Bross at 11:40, wind was crazy and blowing us around like rag dolls. At this point we were ready to head home. Not before, of course, navigating our way down the loose, dangerous shale that is the descent of this 7mile loop.

We arrived back to the TH at 12:40, making the full trip 5.5 hours. Four 14ers, two lunch stops, loads of photos, the occasional small talk with fellow hikers, and 7 total miles of hiking..........not bad

3yr old Colby, Mom and Pop arrived back to TH at about 1pm. Dad carried Colby on his back the whole time. They both deserve gold stars!

Hi there,
I was up there on Sunday as well and started a bit after you finishing in about the same time. I carry a wind meter and on top of Bross I measured 52 mph. There were probably some stronger gusts that day. Good thing I brought warm clothing, otherwise I could not have finished the hike.

Bluefin, you started after noon? Did you catch any other type of weather?
And yea, I was thankful for hat and gloves as well.

Reverse Route?

Did you happen to notice or talk to anyone who reversed the route (starting on Bross)? I'm considering reversing the route this weekend but am trying to get more insight! Thanks!

Yea you can do it. The hike up Bross is BRUUUUTAL! Straight up and tiny loose rock. But you can do it, it'll be a great work out!
