 Gladstone to Rio Grande Pyramid

A link to a TR (gasp!) on Dillon and I's journey through the San Juans over 4th of July Weekend. We climbed Gladstone from Bilk Basin, then drove over Ophir and Cinnamon Passes to Lake City, then hit Rio Grande Pyramid from the reservoir.

Gladstone to Rio Grande Pyramid

I hope you enjoy it and as always, thanks for reading!

Ben, I think that was the third time I've run into you in the mountains! The first time I've met Dillon though. Great place to see both of you...and I had another 14er.com sighting on Sunday when we came out...I met The Jedi.

RGP ranks up there as one my favorite cent' 13ers. A backpack in there for other forays is highly recommended.
We did 13,017 and then Window Pk (followed by a trip to The Window) on Saturday, and then I did RGP on Sunday (followed by 13,2something) while Terri did two other 13ers. Great weekend....wish I had more like this one!

Great report, fantastic photos! Thanks for the link.

Nice report.

Gladstone is, by far, the gem of that group; I really enjoyed its ridge. You're right the Skyline Trail to RGP is not well-marked. We wound up taking that very Rincon La Vaca trail that you almost took, which brought us over to the Window but added several miles to our dayhike.

Darin - Thanks man! Was good running into you, again. Like I said, maybe we can plan to run into each other one of these days . Glad to hear you guys had a successful weekend up there. I love that place too and yes, RGP is a great summit.

goingup - Thank you for a great compliment!

jmanner - I know right? Thanks man!

Natalie - Gladstone was very doable. I still think it'd be fun to ski it via that East Face. If you aren't in a rush skis are probably the *best* way to hit it, but the ridge was A okay in my book. Regarding Telluride, I know it's about perspective (most of the time), but not being able to find something to eat in that town put us in a sour mood. Besides, what good's a 4th of July TR w/o at least a little g@*er banter?

JosephG - I agree honestly! Navajo, Rock of Ages, Kilpacker, and Bilk, I'd take Bilk any day. I'd like to go back and check out the Window someday.

Nice grill...

You had me up until the d_baker sighting and then... well, it was fun while it lasted.

Kevin Baker ate dinner in Silverton on July 4 and said the place was completely overrun with rednecks and steakheads. That's why I think the grill is the way to go.

Congrats on two more centennials.

that says Gladstone is actually doable and not a death trap. I am pretty nervous about this one, so thank you! Liking the nod to Bilk Basin approach - Silver Pick is not very scenic, I agree.

Re. Telluride over 4th - talked to my boss who was there with his family last week and he said they had great time. It is all about the perspective.

Cinnamon Pass is fun, particularly in a not so burly vehicle. I still can't believe we made it over that thing in a Jeep Patriot a few years back.

p.s. d_baker - a Jedi sighting - LOL. He's been getting around this past week.
