 My First 14er

Decided it was time for my first 14er so my friend and I headed up to Quandary early sunday on July 20th.
We arrived at the trail head by 6:45am and started our way up just after 7am. Honestly I knew that the elevation
would be a challenge for me since I am from California so I was prepared for that by staying hydrated, with plenty
of high energy snacks, I even took ibuprofen the night before and morning of the climb.
For a weekend day I did not think the trail was as crowded as I thought it might be, although we did seem to beat
a lot of the traffic.

The climb itself was harder than I anticipated, once we got to about the 11k level I needed to slow down and
take short breaks to catch my breath. The last 1k feet was really tough! Taking short 30 second breaks to breath really helped as
well as staying hydrated and eating trail mix too. My advice to newbies like myself, Don't under estimate the altitude
and be prepared and take your breaks when you need them. We summited at 10:15, relaxed on the summit for 30 minutes
and were even served starbucks up top! The trek back down takes a while and is steep so bring trekking poles.

Congrats on your first 14er, and for choosing one that has a rather special place in my heart for asthetic and personal reasons. Many more to go, but you took the hardest first step: BEGINNING!

And I always joke with others - in the rare instances we are not the first to the top - if the coffee was ready. If I ever do that and there is someone wearing a Starbucks apron with coffee to share, well...that would be quite hilarious.

Climb on!

Congratulations on your first 14er!
