Elbert - Black Cloud Trail |
My daughter and I spent an excellent week in the CO mountains. We got there on a Fri. night, spent Sat. 8/2/14 getting used to the altitude and awe-titude. (Both make you stop walking and turn in circles breathing thru your mouth). We stayed at Mt. Elbert Lodge, on highway 82, about 100 yds. from the official Black Cloud trail head, but with a feeder trail beginning at our cabin door. We walked part way up Sat., came down, rested Sun. and walked Black Cloud to the Elbert summit Mon. 8/4/14. In Stair Master terms we did 310 floors Sat. and 498 Mon.
The Mt. Elbert Lodge keepers, Scott and Laura, were very helpful with trail details; printing us a good map marking the 2 creek crossings, where to find the burned out cabin w/surviving outhouse, noting that after the 30ish % climb to the ridge, "it's just a stroll from there to the summit"! The trail is well marked and perfect for the short term goal oriented (as in, if I can just make it to the next switch back!) Seriously, I enjoyed NOT seeing the summit until I got sort of close. And it was fun to have the South Elbert peak as an interim goal.
The Black Cloud Trail is the trail less traveled; we were the only participants 8/4/14! We know this because we started at 6:00 am and got back at 9:00 pm, seeing nobody on the trail! We saw a few non-BC Trailers at the summit. Scott noted that most hikers seem to make the round trip in 8 to 12 hours. So, our 15 hours is a record!?
When I see the mountains, creatures, flowers, and my sweet daughter who can plan wonderful adventures, I'm very confident that beer is not the only proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy! Thank You God.
