San Luis Peak - Northeast Ridge

Hi - I had the pleasure of hiking San Luis Peak today and wanted to share how the Peak exceeded my expectations.

Leaving at 5:45am in the pitch black, my friend and I took the NorthEast Ridge and enjoyed watching daybreak over Stewart Creek to spectacular effect. The trail was well maintained and easy to follow, but what was unexpected was the color and richness of every view during the journey. Being a remote peak, we saw literally 2 other people all day, but enjoyed the solitude and gorgeous vistas that befall us at each step. Beavers, jays, marmots, chipmunks and gorgeous wildflowers bloomed as Fall made it's presence known.

The peak was more tiring than expected and should not be underestimated. The 27.5 miles on farming roads with cattle herding grates was spectacular leading to the campsite we found near the trail head. The campsite was in outstanding condition and a spectacular Colorado weekend was had.

Hey, I think I was one of the other two people you saw. It was Ladies' Day on the summit! We did the trail from West Willow Creek, and it was beautiful. I think San Luis gets a bad rap. The hills were alive with color! (except for all the beetle kill) The drive through Creede and up the mine road was also beautiful. Kip's Grille served up a mean Elk burger afterward. It was great meeting you.
