Yale - Southeast |
Started hike at 6:15AM MST.
Even though this is a Class 2 hike, it is not for beginners or those with very little to no hiking experience. The initial part of the hike gets you to 10,000' fairly quickly with a steep introduction, but levels off for quick walking through the aspen groves and a pine forest. Towards the end of the pine forest the grade increases and does not let up. Once you reach treeline it becomes increasingly difficult, with the most difficult portion being the switchbacks that end near the first false summit of Yale. Reaching the summit does require some boulder/rock-navigating skill and comfortability. Make sure to pay attention to the cairns!
The weather today was good, I reached the summit just before 10:15 (just shy of a 4 hour hike up taking my time and plenty of water breaks) and the skies had been blue with little cloud cover. Wind picked up dramatically around 11 and it became unbearably cold at the top. Coming down from the summit in the wind was frustrating to say the least. Clouds increased significantly after that, but once I reached treeline again the temperature was perfect and made for an easy hike to the car.
No snow at the summit or anywhere on the trail, very dry conditions.
