 Mt. Sneffels - Labor day and first 14er

About me: I'm from Indiana, with an elevation of 879 Feet. I'm not in the greatest shape. I researched this route for nearly a year before I climbed it to make sure I would know the route/the possible conditions I would face when I did finally climb it.

I initially came to Colorado to climb Sneffels during Memorial day weekend but got sick the Sunday before, and didn't recover until about a week after I returned back home. I did drive up to the lower trail head my first trip and took some pictures even though I knew I wouldn't be able to climb the mountain. Since I wasn't able to climb my first trip I decided to plan another trip for Labor day since one of my new year resolutions was to climb a mountain in Colorado.

I ended up flying into Denver on Aug 30th and then from there flew into Montrose 4 hours later. I stayed in Ouray (still not sure how its pronounced) at the Ouray Inn which was nice enough for my needs. I initially went to Telluride to take some pictures before I ended up at Ouray around 7PM. I had only slept 3 hours in the last 40 hours by the time I fell asleep on the 30th. I relaxed on the 31st and went to sleep around 10:30PM and woke up around 4:30AM on the 1st. By the time I got ready and drove to the lower trail head it was about 600 and I ended up around the base of Sneffels around 7:45. I ended up summiting around 10-1015 I believe. I made sure to take my time climbing and took plenty of breaks due to being a flatlander. In the end the view was amazing, but the main route makes the trip not so much fun, but I'm glad to say I've completed my first 14er.

V Notch: It's not too bad, really the hardest part is coming back down it and even that was relatively easy and just mainly nerves.

Standard Route: Not too much fun going up or down, if you have the technical skill the other route almost has to be easier at least going up.

I almost turned around several times on my way to the base due to being super tired and not being able to see exactly where I was but I'm really glad I didn't because being on the top was such an awesome experience.

Nice to see another Hoosier bitten by the climbing bug.

It's too bad you got sick back in May. I did Sneffels on May 31st and it was awesome. Started at 3:30 AM and was able to mostly race to the summit with crampons on frozen snow. Did a TON of glissading on the way down.

It's pronounced ”ur-ray”, I am surprised every yuppie that lives there didn't correct you at every chance. I thinkI was taught within 10 seconds of arriving in the area for the first time.

Anyways, glad you enjoyed it, I love the San Juans.

Just finished all the 58 14ers, but I remember doing Sneffels as one of the first of the harder 14ers. It looks so short, but it's a lot harder that it seems it should be. Come back and do some more. It's somewhat addicting.

@paul109876 where are you from?
@jrs1965 yeah it was quite the blow I really wanted to glissade if I could have climbed. I’m pretty sure there was another 14ers member there because I recognized the vehicle from another post
@dakota I didn’t really do anything in Ouray besides sleep. I pretty much spent my time in Montrose/Telluride before I climbed. Although my next trip I’ll probably hit up some restaurants any suggestions?
@wundermarmont thanks, and good luck!
@otis Congrats! and I’ll most likely be back next year, haven’t decided on my next.
