Beautiful fall weather for a Sawatch twofer.

This past weekend had fantastic weather for climbing. Winds were light by fall standards (only a few gusts knocked me off balance).

My favorite part of fall climbs is not having to worry about thunderstorms. We hiked in the clouds all day without a care, which made for some great photos as well.

The road to the trailhead is clear and we didn't really hit any snow on the south faces until over 13,000 feet. Snow on the north faces is down below treeline, but is not very deep. The deepest patch we found was just a couple feet deep, with the occasional hole more like 3 feet deep.

Would love to hear if anyone has attempted the couloir on the east face of Grizzly. Looks like it could be fun, but I wonder about the finish as I couldn't see a clear line.

And thanks for the explanation of white -vs- orange colored rocks in the streams. I had seen a lot of the white in Ice Lake Basin and didn't know what caused it. Must be essentially bauxite? And as a result of your report, I guess I'm going to have to back up and catch Garfield. McNasser Gulch is a beautiful area so I sure don't mind going back up there. Thanks for posting this!

That sure was an annoying ridge to gain on the way up (loose) but a nice ridge and summit once you are up there! I also remember a strange black color to some the rocks in the summit area. Definitely a unique summit in the Sawatch.

Also, I think we had concluded same as you that the storage unit was a dynamite locker.

Thanks for posting,

Thundersnow?!

Wow, it seemed too cold for any lightning. I thought that only occurred during snowstorms closer to the freezing point.

Jay - I learned about what colored the creeks after posting my Sunshine/Redcloud trip report and a geologist explained it to me. I've never seen the different color by water level before though.

Derek - We gained the ridge much later than you, I think you hit looser stuff than we did.

These two have been on my radar for a couple years now, and I still haven't gotten there. You've helped me bump it up on my list. Great report !

Grizzly was a surprisingly grueling peak for me. I think we found the least solid talus-and-scree scramble up through those cliff bands. The weather deteriorated before we could get to Garfield, but this report makes me want to get back there. Well done, and fun info on the water coloring and the ”refrigerator.”

I remember considering that E couly once and thinking it would have a technical topout around mid 5th. It would be interesting to go back and give it another look. There are a few s-facing shorties on E. Garfield that look pretty nice.

are definitely unusual. Imagine our surprise when we heard thunder/lighting over our heads on Sunday - or was it thundersnow?
