 Snow play-Sherman and Torreys

A year ago I had some doubts about hiking due to having osteoarthritis in my lumbar region, some pars defects and degenerative disk disease a messed up SI joint and central stenosis with a lot of numbness in my left foot. The surgeons wanted to put titanium rods along my L3-4-5 with w laminectomy to open up the nerve routes.

But I chose to go with the Physical Therapy route and lots of stretching. almost a year later my back and legs feel much better so I tested them out on Sherman.

Driving along 4 mile Creek I saw my 1st moose in Colorado which was a good omen.

I was a little worried with all of the snow still left on the saddle between Sherman and Sheridan and along the ridge of Sherman. I threw my microspikes in my pack just in case and off I went.

I just took my time and kicked some steps and enjoyed the walk. I started at 6:30 a.m. and was on the summit at 9:30. Spent some time there eating Peanut M&M's and talking with some folks from Denver and trading photo ops.

back down and at the hotel in Frisco by noon.

I took the next day off then on July 2nd headed towards Torreys. The road up to the trailhead just past the private property sign was a little rough but I made it to the parking lot with no drama.

I started hiking around 5:00 a.m. and again took my time, talked with folks and enjoyed the view along the way. I had to go just a little higher than the saddle and then cut across the cross to avoid the cornice in the middle of the saddle.

Once I started up Torreys I noticed it was a little steeper than it looks from down in the basin. I had a couple of trail runners pass me up for the 2nd time on my way up. The 1st time they passed me up they were on their way up Grays.

So once I got to the summit there were a few folks up there. Again, enjoyed the view with some snacks and photos.

All in all a great trip!!!!! I learned a little more about myself and how to handle the altitude and how to lighten my pack even a little more. And I'm looking forward to the next one already.

Sometimes a person doesn’t have a choice, but opting for therapy, exercise, stretching, etc. is definitely worth a try and paid off for you! Congrats on Sherman! What’s next?

Well, since knocking off Sherman and Torreys, my next set of 14ers will be Decalibron and Redcloud/Sunshine and then Handies. Next year I get another week of vacation so i can spend more time working on my list.
This September I’m heading out East to do some hiking in Maine. We’ve never been out east to do any hiking so any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!!!!!
