Alone on the Summit |
From South Elbert TH. Started 1:30pm, sumitted 5:00 pm, 15 minutes alone on summit before another late afternoon hiker appeared from the NE Ridge. Left summit at 5:20PM reached truck at 7:50 PM. Beautiful sunset and moonrise on drive out.
Began through the aspens and on the well marked trail, passed only a handful of hikers coming down, was told 70 + people at summit around noon. Continued up obvious trail, yes, the Aspen section at the beginning is steep and rooty. Sky remained clear with the exception of "black cloud" that seemed to hang there all day as our friend providing shade and no rain. See Black Cloud TH. There is no water on this trail except two small spring heads over 13,000'. We saw several people not prepared for this.
With proper planning, a late afternoon hike can be really enjoyable, crowd free even on one of the most popular 14ers. You do need to plan for dropping temperatures as the sun dips below the peaks, well before actual sunset.
