 Humboldt for the Perseids

Headed up Humboldt in the late-night hours for the Perseid Meteor shower. I drove to the upper 4WD trailhead and hiked in 2.5 miles, then turning right on the trail toward the upper lake and the west ridge ascent. Trail was muddy in a few spots, but easily passable. Once above treeline, the trail was dry all the way to the summit. I enjoyed viewing 200 to 300 Perseid meteors on the warm, moonless, and very clear night! Total hike times were ROUGHLY 1 hour along the road, 1 hour to the lakes area, 1 hour up the switchbacks, and 1 hour to the summit.

I descended the switchbacks then wandered over toward the gully near Broken Hand pass for a few snow photos, then returned home for work the next day!

road to upper trail head

could a mini van make it to (i guess it’s called this) the upper trail head? i understand they graded the road. I’ve been on this stretch of road before and it was strictly four wheel drive then.

Hi! I would NOT recommend a minivan due to low–clearance issues. 2WD with moderate to high clearance, sure.

The good news is the additional hiking is only 2.5 miles of easy pathway if you park at the bottom. PLUS you could probably hitch a ride if there are other drivers! I arrived at 12:30am on my last trip, but on my descent I offered a few folks a ride but they chose to walk it.
