 West Slopes - Northwest Gully

Arrived at trailhead around 6:15 AM and the parking was already overflowing to the street. There was also a line to use the toilette and if you plan to use it be sure to have packed your own TP.

We started our climb on the West Slope trail at 6:45 AM, the sky was clear of clouds and the sun was still being blocked by the mountain. This made for a cool ascent. The trail was fairly muddy at the bottom, I would recommend wearing footwear that you can easily walk through mud and avoid walking off the trial. We had reached the summit around 8:45 AM.

We decided to take the Northwest Gully route down from the summit. Not soon after starting our descent, I had wished that I had my climbing helmet and some leather gloves for protection. The route was steep with plenty of loose gravel and small boulders, this meant the whoever was on the downhill side, needed to be out of the way of any rock fall. Also, the route isn't marked at all and I'm glad I had loaded the GPX file from this site onto my GPS device. This helped a lot and gave us a piece of mind that we were not wondering off the route.

Summary of Northwest Gully:
  • This is a route and not a trail. It is not marked and a gps helped a lot.
  • Helmet and gloves would be a nice for this route.
  • Lots of loose gravel and small boulders, be care of any climbers below.
  • GPS helped a lot.

We had made it back to the car at around 11:15 AM. There were a few clouds large clouds forming around the summit and looked like it might rain. I always plan to be off a mountain before noon, to avoid any afternoon storm.

I've done that route a couple times but always done it in the opposite direction - up the gully and down the standard route - and yeah, gloves and helmet are mandatory, IMO. Guess I'll have to try it in the other direction one of these days.
