 A Return to Chicago Basin

A Return to Chicago Basin

My first trip into Chicago Basin was in the summer of 2013. Back then the objective was simple. Check off Colorado's 4 most remote 14ers and make it safely back to the train in one piece. By all accounts the weekend was a success, but one thing was certain. I'd be back in the Wemi sooner than later. Over the years that followed I've made good on that promise, with each trip a constant reminder that the Weminuche, the granddaddy of all Colorado's wildernesses, is hands down in a class all by itself.

Recently I had the privilege of sitting next to Elizabeth Stevens and Ryan Kushner at dinner during our annual reunion with the Jansen family. At the time Elizabeth mentioned she had 15 or so 14ers remaining and could use some partners as Ryan would be off in Pakistan for 2 months climbing something I can't even try to pronounce. Not being one to ever really turn down a Wemi trip, I gladly accepted the invitation. Keep reading...

Your pics and narrative are always top drawer. Maybe you should give up accounting and become an travel writer? Would make March/April more fun!

"As best as you can tell it" is about as good as it gets. Such a treat in prose and pictures!

to be able to keep up with Andrew Hamilton, even for couple days AND to take great photos in the process. Great work, Dillon. Jay521 is definitely onto something with the travel writer idea. NatGeo should be calling you shortly.

p.s. I did forget how to walk downhill. Hopefully I won't need crutches! I better remember soon how it's done without the help of any motorized equipment (sticks or wheels).

You write a mean report; and fantastic photos! Yeah, that first shot - WOW! that's what it's all about!

Looks like a really fun team. As I likely will never get down into that marvelous area, it's nice to be able to enjoy them through you. Thanks for sharing it!

Looking forward to Neva.

You should give running a try
7/8/2016 7:42am
It makes things go way faster....

Good work out there, my man. This is a lot of effort. And time. And walking. My legs ache just thinking about it. Did you find the boogeyman? Rumor has it he lives around Molas Pass this time of year, preying on Sarnelli's once they have given their last ounce of energy trying to re-ascend.

Late August. Wemi. Again. My goal is to not get smoked on the ascent of Jupiter. It's gonna be Humboldt Part deux. You, Jason, and Rick have been warned!

Jay - You the man. And I think you mean January through April. I'd give up accounting for just about anything.

Raj - thanks man. Appreciate the kind words!

Natalie - It was a good asskicking, but a heck of an outing. I hope you still remember how to walk down a hill with all your hobbies!

Doug - It was a solid team for sure. The general consensus was that for a group that hadn't done much together previously, we all relatively stayed together and held our own. Andrew was just being nice though.

JB - Is that a Tina Turner lyric? Thanks for the beers Monday buddy. They helped ease the pain and I really missed Taj. If I wasn't loco, you wouldn't hang out with me. And damn good work on Gannett!

Brando - fine looking crew indeed I might only be able to climb 5.5, but yes I can walk. It's a trade off that I'd gladly give up, haha.

dsr1986 - good lookin avatar. thanks dude.

Ashley - Get back in there! You've been a few pretty cool places recently too though. Keep it up.

akafuzzjones - enjoy the trip and glad you liked the TR.

Zabinoinioino - haha, running is hard. If you pull another Humboldt on me, consider us no longer friends. I will still keep in touch with Odie though. You missed the Tina singalong on Monday!

You just never know who you will run into on a Weminuche adventure.
Great photos, and the whole crew did some impressive stuff in there!
