 Standard route

Last minute we decided to head to the mountains for a day since it was 99 degrees in Grand Junction. Since it wasn't planned we decided to stay in Leadville. It was a pretty crappy motel but we were only there for 8 hours. It took about an hour and 20 minutes to get to the trailhead. We did pass about a million campsites but also about that many campers. There were still places you could find to camp but I would keep that in mind if you are heading down there. The main road was a big washboard so you couldn't drive real fast. The last 2 miles is high clearance only, surprisingly we did see that someone got a pop up camper up a ways in there.

So awesome that it was only 34 degrees when we started!

The distance to the summit is short so it was steady uphill. The Three Apostles were beautiful

We didn't get started until after 6 so there were a lot of people making their way up the switchbacks as well as a line of people below us

The top section has pretty loose dirt on the trail. It was almost easier to climb up the nearby rocks instead. It was obviously harder coming down than it was going up. No problems for Benny dog-he didn't even have to endure his doggy shoes this time.

It was a windy day on the summit at 830 but otherwise beautiful. Lots of other people and dogs to share in the fun.

On the way back down we were excited to finally use something from our safety kit for someone else. Sometimes you wonder if you really want to pack around that extra weight, but duct tape really can come in handy for a broken shoe!

It probably was up to 60 degrees or more on our way back down. Why should the dog have all the fun

We finished about 5 hours later and headed back for the heat of Grand Junction

Good climb!

I was up there the same day, only 4 hours later. The pup and I had the peak to ourselves for a while, but the wind was howling by that point. Thanks for the write up.
