Longs Peak via Keyhole Route |
9/6 and 9/7 double checked with the rangers on weather and trail conditions, not bad.
9/8: 4:00am arriving at Longs east trailhead at 9,405ft above sea level, it's a Thursday so there were some parking spaces available.
9/8: 4:20am started to hike up. 1st mile in 26 minutes, 2nd mile in 29 minutes, 3rd mile in 44 minutes including a short break.
9/8: 6:40am hit Chasm Lake trail junction 3.5 miles from the trailhead. Beautiful sunrise caught, sunrise from shoulders of the "twin sisters". A long break at the junction, drank more water, ate a sandwich, took some pictures, added some layers, left my company behind (she headed for Chasm Lake and I continued my trek to Keyhole).
9/8: 9:15am arriving at Keyhole, all the way to this point was pretty dry with a very few icy spots in the boulder field that could easily be avoided. Moderate wind in boulder field, gusting 60mph some spots but not bothering me. Chatted with three guys from Denver, about my last year's experience (I made to Keyhole last July but didn't continue because of strong wind and icy conditions after Keyhole).
9/8: 9:40am crossed the Keyhole and started the climbing through the ledges and trough. Strong wind at the Keyhole (60mph estimate), but wind died down right after I got up to the ledges. the trail has been dry on the ledges and trough, only a few small icy spots on trough and I barely noticed that as I was looking for the ices...strong wind at turning point from Trough to the Narrows and wind died down again after I turned from the Trough to the Narrows.
Wind picked up again at start of the Homestretch, around 45mph. The Homestretch was dry all the way up.
9/8: 11am at top of Longs. it was warmer than I thought, less windy then I expected. 25mph. the flat top is about size of 2 soccer fields (estimate!). I took some photos, ate some energy bars, drank some Gatorade, chatted with some guys.
9/8: 11:40am started to descend, some traffic from Homestretch to Narrows to Trough, less crowded at the Ledges.
9/8: 3pm back to the Trailhead.
