Finally, a Kite Lake Summit |
---|
Over the last few years I've been turned away on Kite Lake due to "Bad" weather. Extreme wind, Thunderstorms and sleet. So, another year another shot. I had my new wind breaker/rain jacket and microspikes with me just in case. I knew there was some snow up above but nothing that looked bad and according to reports there were well worn tracks to follow or step in. The trail was clear to just before the saddle between Democrat and Cameron and then was clear again. No more snow just climbing until I got to the false summit. Which had a well worn trail. When I got to the summit there were plenty of youngsters there all part of 1 big group. And then there was the old fart I had severely under estimated my calorie burn and neglected eating enough on my way up. While on the summit I began to feel a bit "Yucky" and had a dull head throb starting up so i decided to head back down to the car instead of over to Cameron. By the time I got back to the car I had a full blown headache and was sick to my stomach. I made it a point to drink lots of water and tried to eat but it was just not helping. Once I got back to Fairplay I stopped at the Shell Station, got 2 fruit pies and a Mountain Dew and started heading back to Salida. Within the hour 1 felt 100% better. Lesson learned- Big guys like me need big calories while hiking. On my next hike up Huron, I packed a couple of those magical Hostess Apple pies along with my other goodies and had no issues. I started adding up the calories of the food I am taking so that I make sure I have plenty. |
