Hit the Kite Lake trail around 6:30 on July 22. Easy drive up. The last 200 feet of road looked squirly so I parked at the sign that says pay $3 to camp at Kite Lake (no recepticle for paying, so it looks unattended). Met a new friend - Peter from Florida - at the parking area. He had been in Colorado for a week and was on his way to bagging 12 peaks. Made me a little sad to know that there are native Coloradans that have never climbed one peak, much less 12. Then I looked at the empty parking lot and trail and thanked God they were all off at the mall and not on the trail. If you can, go on a weekday with an ealy start. We saw maybe 8 people all day. That includes a family of 4 at the top of Lincoln. Easy trails all the way. Peter was a great conversatinalist and a fast climber - faster than me (hes 23, Im 40). But I can spank almost anybody on the way down (I assume that I am not THE fastest down, but I havent had anybody keep up yet). The scree on Bross that everybody complains about was a blast. I ran down almost the whole way (had to wait for Peter). Its great - take large bounding steps and roll your foot and you can make very fast time. We were actually looking for a trail that we could see from just below the summit but could not get to it without a lot of extra hiking. Although I enjoy "scree running", I do not like the erosion, so next time I will cut across back to Cameron. We finished the day with a burger and a few pints at Breckenridge Brewery by 2:00. Its a tradition to stop there after a hike in the area, as they do not care how dirty or smelly you are.
Tomorrow - Grays and Torreys
Nothing else new to report that you have not read already about the supposed closure. No "No Trespassing" signs. No fences. Nothing has changed since the announcement that they are off-limits. So bag these before that changes.
