Re: 05/29/2005 - Mount Antero via Baldwin Creek

Climbed Antero via the same route on Thursday, 26 May. I did ascend the snow gully; I think it will be faster if you can move at a consistent pace uphill (Ive been having trouble with this lately; very staccato when ascending). Some folks crossed the top of the snowfield on the road right as I was starting at the bottom of it, but by the time they had descended the road to the base of the snowfield I had made it about half- to three-quarters of the way up the snowfield. Its definitely faster on the way down; if the snows hard enough you can get a mild glissade in.

Anyway, I ascended the gully to a hundred feet or so below the road, where it softened up, then hiked up scree, sand, and talus to the road and took the road to its end at the small gem quarry at the saddle on the S ridge. I proceeded to scramble up some easy 3rd- and 4th-class stuff around the west side of the gendarme and only found the direct, easy route on the way back.

Sounds like I definitely had better "population conditions" than JoshK. =D>
