Missouri Mountain via Missouri Gulch 6/3

Started off around 8:00am. The trail was well defined past the cabin and past the turnoff for Belford, but we lost the trail in the snow cover shortly after. We ended up taking a crazy LONG snow covered, post-holing route up the northeast ridgeline and hiking basically that whole northeast ridgeline until we connected with the trail.

So my advice to people looking to summit, and follow the standard trail, not one of the couloirs, is to have faith and keep going strait for a while through the snow fields. The sharp right turn that is described in the route listed on this site has a sign that is above the snow. So wait for it…

The snow up to the ridgeline is knee deep and makes for a long day, but can be done. Snowshoes would not help because of the steepness, and because the snow was so soft.

For our decent we glissaded down the west most Couloir. It was steep and fast! No chance of an avalanche, and the snow was still pretty frozen. If you are looking for the more technically challenging route I would say that these are probably ready to go with an ice axe and crampons.
