6/2/2005 - N Face Couloirs of Missouri Mtn

Since bmathews brings it up, last Thursday my climbing partner and I climbed Missouri Mountain via the easternmost north-face couloir that is visible as you hike up the gulch (not the very narrow one you can only see clearly from the Belford area). Snow was pretty good, although we got there late enough in the morning that we were able to almost kick steps the whole way up (although there were a few good stretches where crampons were certainly desirable).

From the summit, we descended the "C" Couloir which tops out just N of the summit by 20 or 30 feet, plunge-stepping the first couple hundred feet, then glissading the rest. It was late in the day (for ascending/descending snow...) and snow conditions at the bottom of the couloir were garbage - sugar snow as deep as I could plunge the axe. Was great for controlling the speed of your glissade, but I was relieved to get down and off the slope for safety reasons (avy, etc).

To those who are planning to head up via the standard route, be advised that we did see evidence of recent slide activity on east-facing slopes like the one that gains the ridge. Although bmathews went up that way and didnt report any problems, Id advise getting to that point and being up and down those slopes early.
