5/10/05 - West Slopes from Guanella Pass

Great day, perfect 14er weather!

The pass is closed due to construction at about 9 miles, and the trailhead is 12 miles. But the road was just a little muddy so I continued passed the closed sign to the trailhead. To my surprise I was not the only person, two other guys had camped at the trailhead in their car. (Also construction workers where driving little Geo Metros past the trailhead, so it's not really closed)

Anyway, I wore hiking boots, (no snowshoes or crampons) and was able to summit in two hours. The trail had been hiked, and was easy to follow. The snow was mostly hard packed and made for an easy ascent.

My only regret is that I didn't bring my snowboard up with me.
