5/21/2005 - Huron Peak North Ridge from Cross Mountain
Today I traversed from Cross Mountain along the ridge to Huron, hitting Middle Mountain on the way. I unintentionally skipped Browns Peak, thinking it was another point on the ridge. Oh well, it certainly isnt anything special. Trying to make this a purely off-trail ridge traverse I decided I was gonna force my way up the "north rib" of Cross Mountain rather than taking the road/trail up it. Since it was dark out when I started I dont think I would have located the road/trail anyway since I hadnt a clue where it was. Let me just say i whole-heartedly recommend NOT CLIMBING what I did. Cross Mountain should be re-named Choss Mountain. This pile of rock was the worst thing I have climbed I think. The whole mountain seemed to be falling down as I flailed up for 2500 feet on every different type of scree and choss known to man. Thankfully upon reaching the summit things improved. The traverse from Cross to Huron is very pleasent. The views are non-stop and it is an easy, friendly ridge that doesnt make you go up or down very much. The only complaint I had was the wind. Since I was carrying my skis I would get blown every which way like a sailboat and that god rather old real quick. The climb of Huron from the North ridge is very asthetic. The peak is very pretty from that angle...much more so than climbing it from the West or Southwest. If you are looking to climb Huron and want to try a slightly different way, give this traverse a shot. It really isnt very difficult and it is nice doing a loop where you dont double-back over any ground. Just take my advice and do NOT forge your own way up Cross Mountain. -josh Note: I should mention that there is actually a nice snow coulior that current goes from the bottom of the gulch where the 4wd road on the topo goes up Cross Mountain to nearly the summit. I didnt know it was continuous when I ascended since it was still pretty dark. This coulior would make a reasonable way to climb Cross and get on the traverse when it is filled with snow, as it is now.
