Mt. Shavano Trip Report 06/17/2006

Team G‘s Back with a vengence (and a blister)
Good day fellow hikers. Just wanted to put to sleep the rumors that 'Team G' was quarreling and that being the reason no posts had surfaced in awhile....quite the opposite is true. New sound track in hand we headed out to conquer the mighty combo Shav/Tab. Fueled by 'The Village People' and 'Gilligans Island' theme song the drive was pretty painless. I would however, allow a little more time to get to the blank creek trailhead than you might anticipate....road was a bit rough. Once there we noticed that there were a number of other climbers that had allready 'jumped the gun' and were on the mountain. In order to summit the two peaks first we knew we had some work to do. Hike was pretty quick. We made it to treeline in an hour flat. (My heart only quit twice) The trail from there was easy to follow and no real 'fashion foul-ups' all the way to the top. Once on top of Shav we lost the big packs and grabbed an h2o bottle apiece and set out for Tab. Pretty painless crossing and the two ridges are virtually snow free at this point. Summited Tab in little under 45mins and barely beat the group that was coming up from the Tab side. 'Paul', the groups guide, was a nice lad and deserves a hand as he finished the Cristos today. Good work Paul!! After a few pics it was time to head back to Shav....pretty painless again (I was out of gas by now) looks like the 4500 calories we burnt on the ascent didn't fully get replaced by the two Wal Mart granola bars I had. Who knew? Hung out on the top of Shav for awhile...met a nice couple from Denver and Alamosa, and after playing hero and saving the group from a rabid Marmot (whom was trying to steal my wallet)...we collected ourselves and it was time to head to the truck. Descent was quick....hot...and we were overdressed! Made it to the car and off we went. Damage report: banged up the old tendinitis (I have no idea how to spell this)...new monster blister that resembles Jimmy Hoffa, and a bit of a sunburn from the lack of coverage provided by my ‘Hawaiian Tropics spf 45...good news is, I got to keep the wallet.
